Study Guide.
A list of all the sections we will study, cross-referenced with the corresponding sections of Copi & Cohen, Introduction to Logic, 11th and 12th editions, is available here.
Preview of Copi & Cohen, Essentials of Logic, 2nd Ed.
The first three chapters of the new edition of Copi & Cohen may be downloaded from the publishers.
(Or they could be--Pearson seem to have removed the download. Ask me nicely and I'll email you the old samples.)
Errors in Copi & Cohen, Essentials of Logic.
There are some regrettable errors in both editions of this book.
All the misprints I know of in the second edition are listed here: if you have spotted any others please let me know.
All the misprints I know of in the first edition are listed here.
Online help with Logic
There are some excellent resources for learning logic available online. Although not everyone finds these programs helpful, many people report significant benefits (including higher grades) from using them.
I have put up links to some of the better sites on this page. Please feel free to add more.
Each of these sites contains interactive exercises which will allow you to check your knowledge of the material we have covered this semester.
Venn diagrams:
http://www.roninabox.com/venndiagram.html
Truth tables:
This site offers self testing on truth tables, but requires a subscription:
http://www.hatzicware.com/lkdemo.html
http://www.oakland.edu/phil/cafe/
This site also has material on proofs in propositional logic (described as `derivations' in `sentential logic'), although the system used is different from that taught in class.
Reverse (or indirect) truth tables:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/reasoning/symlogic/classes/class4.htm
This site summarises the reverse method (here called 'indirect') discussed in class.
http://philosophy.lander.edu/~jsaetti/Welcome.html
This site links to a variety of Java Applets which you may use to test your grasp of various methods, including abbreviated truth tables.
Refutation trees:
Those of you without the second edition of Copi & Cohen, or the Schaum Outline, may find useful the notes to lectures 5 through 8 linked to here:
http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~csj6/details/PY1003
Logical proof:
This site offers self testing on proofs (for a slightly different proof system), but requires a subscription:
http://www.hatzicware.com/lkdemo.html
Another site offering software and tutorials:
http://softoption.us/
Some helpful revision notes on logical proof (and many other topics covered in the course) may be found at
http://www.philosophypages.com/lg/
(NB: The character encoding for the logical symbols does not seem to work on the Mac.)
Conditional and indirect proof:
The first edition of Copi & Cohen's Essentials does not cover these topics. However, you can find information online. For example, these notes on conditional and indirect proof seem helpful.
